Dr. Maria Berger

Maria Berger studied law and economics (1975-79) and holds a doctorate in law. Since 7 October 2009, she has been Judge at the European Court of Justice. She was, inter alia, Deputy Head of Unit at the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research, Head of the European Integration Section of the Federal Chancellery (1989-92); Director at the EFTA Surveillance Authority, in Geneva and Brussels (1993-94); member of the European Parliament (1996-2007, 2008-2009) and member of the Committee on Legal Affairs; substitute member of the European Convention on the Future of Europe (2002-2003); Federal Minister for Justice of Austria (2007-2008). She has published on various topics of European law and is Honorary Professor of European law at the University of Vienna.
